SAVANNAH - Savannah Mayor Floyd Adams has withdrawn from the crowded race for Georgia's 12th Congressional District, citing his struggles to raise money and his need to care for his ill mother.
Adams' withdrew yesterday, eleven days before the qualifying deadline for candidates. Nine other Democrats and three Republicans have announced plans to run.
Elected Savannah's first black mayor in 1995, Adams was expected to be a strong contender in Savannah. The port city shares the sprawling 12th District with Augusta and Athens.
It was drawn to maximize Democratic voting strength, with blacks making up 39 percent of the voting-age population.
Adams said he has not decided whether to endorse another candidate. But his withdrawal leaves room for other candidates to compete for Adams' base of largely black voters.
