Adams withdraws from 12th District race

SAVANNAH - Savannah Mayor Floyd Adams has withdrawn from the crowded race for Georgia&#39;s 12th Congressional District, citing his struggles to raise money and his need to care for his ill mother. <br> <br> Adams&#39; withdrew yesterday, eleven days before the qualifying deadline for candidates. Nine other Democrats and three Republicans have announced plans to run. <br> <br> Elected Savannah&#39;s first black mayor in 1995, Adams was expected to be a strong contender in Savannah. The port city shares the sprawling 12th District with Augusta and Athens. <br> <br> It was drawn to maximize Democratic voting strength, with blacks making up 39 percent of the voting-age population. <br> <br> Adams said he has not decided whether to endorse another candidate. But his withdrawal leaves room for other candidates to compete for Adams&#39; base of largely black voters.
