ATHENS - A 26-year-old Athens-Clarke police officer, one day after being fired, has been charged with child molestation.
George Wayne Fredregill was arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on one count of child molestation, GBI spokesman John Bankhead said.
Fredregill, arrested Tuesday and freed on $15,000 bond, is accused of molesting a 4-year-old boy at Fredregill's home Saturday.
Fredregill had been on the force since September and had not yet completed his one-year probationary period, according to Athens-Clarke personnel records.
Bankhead said relatives of the alleged victim called Athens-Clarke police with the allegations and the police turned the case over to the GBI on Sunday. Athens-Clarke police fired Fredregill on Monday after receiving the findings.
Fredregill is scheduled to appear in Magistrate Court on July 9.
