Georgia congressman questioned following embarrassing incident aboard plane

By
WASHINGTON - Georgia Representative Sanford Bishop could only wait so long.

New regulations requiring that airline passengers stay seated until 30 minutes after takeoff from Reagan National Airport sparked an embarrassing incident for the congressman aboard Thursday night's Delta Air Lines flight to Atlanta.

After drinking multiple cups of coffee before the flight, Bishop waited while the plane taxied on the runway. He waited for the first 30 minutes. And he tried to wait in a lengthy bathroom line.

But when nature called Bishop asked a flight attendant for a plastic cup and some privacy. No charges were filed, but he had some explaining to do for airport security officers when the plane touched down.

Bishop's spokesman, Selby Cash, explained the situation Friday. He said, quote: ``The bottom line is he desperately needed to go to the bathroom. There was someone in there taking a very extended time. He was beyond physically being able to wait and was in considerable discomfort.''

Delta spokesman John Kennedy confirmed that there was an incident and said police at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport were involved. Calls to police and airport officials were not immediately returned.

McCash explained the flight attendant directed Bishop, who was seated in coach, to relieve himself in a closed area between the cockpit and first class. When the bathroom door finally opened, he disposed of the cup and washed his hands.
