Baby survived on her own for ten days

By
ATLANTA - A 22-month old girl named Miracle rummaged through a pantry and cabinets, surviving on whatever food she could find for up to ten days after her pregnant mother died in their Atlanta home.

Police, responding to a report of a foul odor and a swarm of large flies, found her standing next to the her mother's body, which had decomposed so much that she had to be identified by her fingerprints.

Miracle remained in stable condition Tuesday, recovering from malnutrition and dehydration at Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital.

An autopsy indicated 26-year-old Lawarna Stevenson died from complications of diabetes and hypertension.

The medical examiner says Stevenson had been dead at least five days, but no one reported seeing her for ten days. Police say the landlord dropped off a package at her door June 8, and unopened mail was in her box postmarked June 3. On Sunday, neighbors knocked on the door and called police.

Although it is unclear how Miracle managed to keep herself alive, Quigley says there was evidence she may have found food and soda.
