ALPHARETTA - Over the next week or so, residents of Alpharetta may have trouble keeping track of who's in charge. State election laws could give the suburb north of Atlanta three mayors in eight days.
Mayor Chuck Martin resigned Monday to run for the state House and was replaced by Mayor Pro Tem Arthur Lechas. But Lechas must step down by Tuesday if he wants to run in the mayoral election August 20.
In that case, a new interim mayor will be chosen from the remaining City Council members at a special meeting Monday.
The City Council set the qualifying period as Friday, Monday and Tuesday to give Fulton County officials at least the required 45 days to print ballots for residents who want to vote absentee. The county administers Alpharetta's election system.
