ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE - Eighteen illegal immigrants who had been hired by a local contractor for work at Robins Air Force Base were prevented from entering the base.
Base officials reported that 14 illegal workers were detained on April 30 and another four on May 2 because they failed to show or had improper identification documents.
``This is a fairly new phenomenon and we need to discuss how we're going to handle these cases,'' District Attorney Kelly Burke said. ``We're getting a lot of them.''
A contractor performing construction work on the base hired the individuals, according to the base officials. They did not identify the contractor.
The four immigrants had false identification documents and were arrested and charged with forgery and at least 10 of the others were handed over to the Immigration and Naturalization service, base officials said.
