EPA delays ozone deadline for Atlanta

ATLANTA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has delayed the deadline for metro Atlanta to meet federal ozone standards, citing pollution transported into the area from other states.

The head of the EPA's air planning branch in Atlanta - Kay Prince - said Tuesrday that nitrous oxide emissions carried by the wind from Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina will prevent Atlanta from meeting the May 2003 deadline.

The new deadline is November 2004, even though measures to reduce NOx emissions within Georgia - such as emission inspections for cars and light trucks and controls over large power plants - still must meet the 2003 deadline.

A lawyer for several groups suing the EPA said the latest extension is another stalling tactic similar to an extension EPA granted in December for the motor vehicle emissions portion of Atlanta's air-quality plan.
