MARIETTA - A man who trained at a Catholic church in Cobb County has been arrested in Polk County, Florida.
Forty-three-year-old Kenneth Cassity of Auburndale, Florida, was arrested yesterday. Cobb County detectives have filed warrants charging him with two counts of child molestation and four counts of sexual battery.
Cassity is charged with sexually violating three boys, between ages 14 and 16, between July 1999 and December 2000 at the rectory of Saint Ann Catholic Church.
His role at the church is unclear. The warrant refers to him as a seminary student based on what one of the alleged victims told police.
But St. Ann's associate pastor -- the Reverend Raymond Cadran -- told reporters that Cassity was a lay person at the church and that he was asked to leave because he did not ``fit in.''
The Marietta Daily Journal reports today that a parent of one of the victims sent a letter to the church, which was ignored. The parent then sent another letter to the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, which forwarded it to Cobb County authorities.
Police spokesman Dana Pierce says Cassity was asked to leave the Marietta church in August 2000.
Cassity was arrested after a man came forward Monday with information about an incident that happened in late 1999 when Cassity was working at the church.
