Restaurants to raise money for reward fund in bar shooting

By
ATLANTA - A group of restaurants in metro Atlanta will donate a portion of their Monday night sales to help the victims of a robbery at the Sidelines Grille in March.

Sidelines co-owner Barbara Kriewald was shot to death and a manager, Michael Kirby, was shot and paralyzed at the northwest Atlanta sports bar. The Barbara Kriewald Fund was established to help the woman's family and Kirby's rehabilitation as well as to boost the reward fund leading to the capture of the killer.

Kriewald, who ran Sidelines with her husband, was pregnant with their third child.

A coalition of restaurants has promised to contribute 10 percent of Monday's dinner sales to the fund. Scott Crawford, executive chef at Food 101 in Sandy Springs, is behind the project.

He said his company's newest restaurant, Mangia 101, raised almost $1,000 per night for three nights last week to donate to the fund. Other restaurants in the city decided to join in.

``The best way to put it is if somebody came into your house and you were afraid they were going to steal something and you were watching them in that manner the whole time,'' Crawford said.

``It definitely makes us feel more vulnerable. It makes us a little bit more edgy. We just want to make sure we're doing the right thing for the community.''
