Securities executive to run for insurance commissioner

By
COLUMBUS - Columbus securities executive Lois N. Cohen said she is running as a Democrat to try to unseat Republican Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine.

A former school teacher, Cohen said Thursday that while traveling throughout Georgia this year for her securities business, she found people were concerned about insurance issues.

``We need an insurance commissioner who basically serves the needs of the people of Georgia and not the insurance companies of Georgia,'' Cohen said.

Cohen, 55, had raised more than $53,000 for a run for the District 16 state Senate seat, but the district redrawn by the General Assembly this year favors a Republican candidate, such as incumbent Sen. Seth Harp of Columbus.

``We are already in the process of returning money to those who gave to me for the 16th District race, and we'll be asking for their support for the new campaign,'' she said.
