MINNEAPOLIS - Pam Fine will step down as managing editor of the Star Tribune, effective June 7.
Word of her departure came a week after the announcement that top editor Tim McGuire will retire June 13.
In a message to the staff Friday, Fine did not say why she was leaving or give specifics about her plans other than that she will remain in Minneapolis.

Fine wrote, ``I believe it's a good time for me to start anew and while I don't know what the future holds, I'm confident of its promise.''
Fine did not return a phone call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Fine came to the Star Tribune in 1995 from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where she was assistant managing editor.
The paper announced last week that McGuire will be succeeded by Anders Gyllenhaal, senior vice president and executive editor at The News And Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Both papers are owned by Sacramento, California-based McClatchy Company.
The Star Tribune is the largest paper in the group and the largest in Minnesota, with average weekday circulation of about 376,000.
