ATLANTA - A former defendant in the Ray Lewis murder trial has been indicted on aggravated assault and related charges involving a stolen 1999 Mercedes.
Reginald Oakley, one of two men acquitted in the murder trial involving the Baltimore Ravens linebacker, was arrested Aug. 8, 2001 after a police chase. He was charged with driving a stolen car.
District Attorney Paul Howard said Tuesday charges include possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, theft by receiving stolen property, possession of a vehicle with altered vehicle identification number and attempting to elude police.
Oakley, 26, fled when police stopped him after he narrowly missed striking Atlanta police Officer Kelly Lambert, Howard said.
Lewis was charged with murder along with Oakley and Joseph Sweeting in the stabbing deaths of two men outside an Atlanta nightclub following a party after Super Bowl 2000. The case was settled when Lewis pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice.
He testified against Oakley and Sweeting and was sentenced to a year of probation.
