ROME - The family of a northwest Georgia woman who committed suicide at the Murray County Jail has filed a federal lawsuit seeking $12.5 million from Murray County Sheriff Howard Ensley and two deputies.

Jennifer Dial, 25, of Crandall was found hanging from the shower rod of her cell on Aug. 17, 2000. She died three days later at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court claims the sheriff's office failed to recognize Dial's suicidal state after she was arrested on charges of simple battery and cruelty to children.

They violated her civil rights by failing to put her in an observation cell, the lawsuit said.
