FORT MILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The head of the NAACP says the national office is firmly behind an economic boycott of South Carolina.
Kweisi Mfume Friday came to a welcome center near the North Carolina-South Carolina border to talk about the protest and rally so-called ``border patrols.''
The patrols urge travelers to avoid spending money in South Carolina because the Confederate flag remains on the statehouse grounds.
Mfume told about 150 boycott supporters today that the boycott idea is an example of grass-roots leadership with the organization.
Mfume also says the NAACP has filed a response to a lawsuit filed by South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon. Condon sued the NAACP and a white-pride group over their use of state rest stops and welcome centers for competing demonstrations.
Police officers attended the event to keep the peace as protesters cheered and screamed at passing motorists. There were no problems reported.
