NAACP president Mfume joins 'border patrol' protests

FORT MILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The head of the NAACP says the national office is firmly behind an economic boycott of South Carolina. <br> <br> Kweisi Mfume Friday came to a welcome center near the North Carolina-South Carolina border to talk about the protest and rally so-called ``border patrols.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> The patrols urge travelers to avoid spending money in South Carolina because the Confederate flag remains on the statehouse grounds. <br> <br> Mfume told about 150 boycott supporters today that the boycott idea is an example of grass-roots leadership with the organization. <br> <br> Mfume also says the NAACP has filed a response to a lawsuit filed by South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon. Condon sued the NAACP and a white-pride group over their use of state rest stops and welcome centers for competing demonstrations. <br> <br> Police officers attended the event to keep the peace as protesters cheered and screamed at passing motorists. There were no problems reported.
