Former Ware schools recorder accused of embezzlement

WAYCROSS - A former Ware County High School bookkeeper has been arrested and charged with embezzling $168,320 in high school student activities funds. <br> <br> Judith Gillis, 63, of Millwood surrendered voluntarily Wednesday and was released on $40,000 bond from the Ware County Jail, records show. <br> <br> She was charged with one count of felony theft by conversion, Special Agent in Charge Bill Butler of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. <br> <br> Authorities charged Gillis with stealing money from a Ware County High School student activities fund from July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2001, Butler said. <br> <br> District Attorney Rick Currie said most of the money came from student yearbook sales and admissions to high school football games and other sporting events. <br> <br> ``Ms. Gillis was the bookkeeper for the account that contained those funds,&#39;&#39; said Currie, who requested the GBI investigation after discrepancies were discovered in the account last year. <br> <br> Officials said none of the money was recovered. However, the school system&#39;s insurance company has covered most, $100,000, of the loss. <br> <br> Gillis couldn&#39;t be reached for comment. Her attorney, John Rumker of Douglas, declined comment about the case. <br> <br> Theft is punishable by one to 10 years in prison.
