WAYCROSS - A former Ware County High School bookkeeper has been arrested and charged with embezzling $168,320 in high school student activities funds.
Judith Gillis, 63, of Millwood surrendered voluntarily Wednesday and was released on $40,000 bond from the Ware County Jail, records show.

She was charged with one count of felony theft by conversion, Special Agent in Charge Bill Butler of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Authorities charged Gillis with stealing money from a Ware County High School student activities fund from July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2001, Butler said.

District Attorney Rick Currie said most of the money came from student yearbook sales and admissions to high school football games and other sporting events.

``Ms. Gillis was the bookkeeper for the account that contained those funds,'' said Currie, who requested the GBI investigation after discrepancies were discovered in the account last year.

Officials said none of the money was recovered. However, the school system's insurance company has covered most, $100,000, of the loss.
Gillis couldn't be reached for comment. Her attorney, John Rumker of Douglas, declined comment about the case.
Theft is punishable by one to 10 years in prison.
