Coroner's jury rules police shooting justified

By
MACON - A Bibb County coroner's jury has ruled that a Macon police officer was justified when he shot and killed a man who was wielding a gun last November.

After more than five hours of testimony, the five-member jury took just ten minutes to reach its decision Thursday in the shooting of 21-year-old Justin Strange.

Strange was shot November 16 after stealing a gun, firing it at random and pointing it at himself and police during a chase by officers.

Officer Steven Wesson said Strange was pointing the gun at another officer when the chase ended. Wesson said he fired once when Strange failed to drop the gun as ordered and began to turn toward him.

Authorities said Strange suffered for years with suicidal depression, and had undergone intermittent treatment. He had been released from a hospital two days before he died.
