Gainesville, Cornelia K-Marts spared the ax

The Gainesville and Cornelia KMart stores were spared the ax Friday when the giant retailer released its list of 284 store closings worldwide.

It had been known that KMart would be closing stores - somewhere between 250 and 750 stores - following its bankruptcy filing last year.

The filing became necessary after a lackluster holiday season and plummeting stock price.

KMart is closing 14 stores in Georgia. It was rumored that the store in Athens was to be on that list but the official list did not include the Athens store.
