FORT BENNING - Fort Benning officials have rescinded a day-old policy that banned the use of hand-held cell phones while driving on the post.
Fort Benning spokeswoman Staff Sergeant Sally Toomey said the information released Thursday was premature and post officials needed more time to study the specific prohibitions and how to enforce them.
Toomey said yesterday that they're still evaluating it.
The policy would have been the first at an Army installation to prohibit every driver from using a hand-held cell-phone on post. It also applied to drivers in military vehicles off post.
Post officials used data from the New England Journal of Medicine and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to study the dangers of using a cell phone while driving. The study found drivers are four times more likely to crash while using cell-phones.
