ADEL - An Ohio couple found dead at an abandoned gas station at an Interstate 75 exit in south Georgia died of carbon monoxide poisoning, officials said Tuesday.
The bodies of Fred Adsit, 74, and Gladys Adsit, 71, of Urbana, Ohio, were discovered by an Adel city worker who had noticed the parked vehicle earlier, said Capt. Colin Millison of the Cook County Sheriff's Office.
Millison said the couple were returning to Ohio after spending the winter in Florida, driving a large recreational vehicle and pulling a van behind it.
When the vehicle was discovered, the engine and a small generator were still running, he said. Investigators found that the engine cover at the front of the vehicle was not secured, allowing fumes to enter the RV.
Millison said the couple must have thought they were experiencing travel fatigue, and they pulled into the gas station to rest.
