Talmadge died just after midnight Thursday at his home in Hampton, south of Atlanta. He was 88.
His wife, Lynda, was with him when he died.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

Talmadge underwent open heart surgery in July 1997 to replace a defective heart valve. In 1996, doctors removed a cancerous tumor from his throat.

Talmadge directed Georgia's most potent political machine for more than 30 years after inheriting it from his father.

He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1957 and was a senator until he was defeated by Mack Mattingly in 1980.

Talmadge served on the Watergate investigative committee in 1973, bringing him national attention. But the tables were turned in 1979, when the Senate Ethics Committee looked into irregularities in Talmadge's campaign and office expenses.
Senate members ultimately denounced Talmadge for mishandling his financial affairs.
