ROSSVILLE - An 8-year-old northwest Georgia boy died four days after he was struck by a falling telephone pole in what authorities called ``a pure freak accident.''
Cory Green of Rossville was playing with other children near his grandparents' Fort Oglethorpe home March 16 when the pole fell and pinned him, said Maj. Dewayne Steele of the Catoosa County Sheriff's Department.
Cory died Wednesday at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Police believe the pole was damaged in 1993 by heavy snow, Steele said. It had been replaced by a new pole, but not removed.
Cory suffered severe head and internal injuries when he was pinned by the pole, investigators said.
``This was a pure freak accident,'' Catoosa County Coroner Vanita Hullander said. ``It's bizarre. This is one of the worst freak accidents I've seen.''
