Talmadge laid to rest

By
ATLANTA - Herman Talmadge was remembered at the Capitol Monday as a progressive governor and senator who was able to survive turbulent change as the state moved from its segregated past into a more diverse future.

Talmadge died last week at age 88. His body lay in state at the Capitol on Monday morning before the funeral later in Hampton.

The Secretary of State's office estimated some 700 people filed past the casket during the three-hour viewing in the Capitol rotunda where white-gloved state troopers and other law enforcement officers stood as an honor guard. The casket, framed by floral sprays, was draped in an American flag and Talmadge's portrait was placed nearby.

Just after 11 a.m., the casket was borne from the Capitol to the strains of the ``Navy Hymn'' through a double line of saluting law enforcement officers and lawmakers from both chambers.

Besides Governor Barnes and his wife, Marie Barnes, former governors Lester Maddox and George Busbee and former Senator Sam Nunn joined the family in the solemn march to the hearse.
