Okay, all you history buffs ... I need your help. I keep getting questions about the ghosts of Gainesville. You heard me right: ghosts.
The one I get the most questions about is the Library ghost. It seems there was once a cemetery on the land where the Hall County Library is located. Then a home was built either on that land or close by, and after that a hotel was built which eventually became the old Wheeler Hotel. The Kiwanis Club met there until the 1950's, and the best news stand in town was located there. The hotel building was torn down to make room for the library. Through all of these changes a ghost is said to have been seen there now and then. The ghost was a young female, very pretty and friendly. There's got to be a story here, but that is about all I have been able to dig up ... so to speak.
Then there is the Brenau ghost who, some say, resides in the rafters above the college's beautiful and famous Pearce Auditorium. As could be expected, this one is a college girl.
Tales have been told about a ghost at the old house on the Chattahoochee where pre-Civil War outlaws hung out. But when Lake Lanier filled up, that house went under water and the ghost hasn't been heard from lately. Anyway, if you have any information about Gainesville's ghosts, how about writing it down and sending it to me at Box O, Gainesville, Georgia 30503.
