LAFAYETTE - Though many of their identities may never be known, the bodies found on the property of Tri-State Crematory finally will be laid to rest and honored with a memorial.
County commissioner Bebe Heiskell said Walker County plans to build a memorial to all 339 bodies that were found at the northwest Georgia crematory and will provide proper burial - but not cremation - for the bodies that cannot be identified.
More than 200 of the bodies have not been identified, and investigators say some of the remains may never be identified.
Heiskell said plans for the burial and memorial sites are still being developed, and she expects to release more details by mid-April. She said she is considering a benevolent offer from a local organization, and also wants to give families time to heal.
The county also plans some private gatherings for family members.
Officials also said this week that the search of a lake on the crematory property has ended, with no additional bodies found.
