GRIFFIN - A Griffin police officer has been sentenced to 10 years probation for shooting a motorist who knocked him down on a city street.
Bradford Richardson was convicted Friday of aggravated assault for the July 2000 shooting of Efren Hernandez-Ayala, who suffered brain damage from the shooting.
Richardson was talking to two men pushing a bicycle early one morning when Hernandez-Ayala drove by and clipped him, breaking an arm and injuring his head. Hernandez-Ayala stopped his car and began apologizing, authorities said, but Richardson fired about a dozen rounds at the car.
Richardson will appeal the aggravated assault conviction, police spokesman Felita Williams said.
``His status, suspended without pay, will remain the same until the case has been resolved,'' Williams said.
