MARIETTA - A 16-year-old boy has died after he was shot in the head by his girlfriend in the parking lot of their apartment complex. Police believe the Sunday night shooting was accidental.
The youth, who has not been identified, died Monday.
``At this point, we don't believe any foul play was involved, although we have not ruled (the girlfriend) out and will continue to interview her,'' Cobb Police spokesman Dana Pierce said.

He said investigators also will question another teen who lived in the apartment complex involving how the boy obtained the gun.

``He got the gun from someone in the complex for his own protection, according to his girlfriend,'' Pierce said Tuesday.

Police said the 17-year-old girlfriend told them the two were playing with a handgun the boy had recently obtained.

She said the boy removed the magazine and handed her what he thought to be an unloaded gun. As she took the firearm, it discharged, striking the boy in the head.

No charges have been filed against the girl, Pierce said.
He would not identify the teens, but said they had been students at Osborne High School. Neither was enrolled this semester.
