FORT STEWART - Two units from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield assigned to support Operation Desert Spring have been deployed to Kuwait.
The Army loaded Apache helicopters onto a cargo plane Tuesday night as the 3rd Infantry Division, headquartered at Fort Stewart, prepared to go overseas.
Fort Stewart rotates units through the region but was excused for the past year and a half as troops trained for and completed peacekeeping missions.

Operation Desert Spring is an ongoing mission to deter Iraq from attacking Kuwait. U.S. troops have been stationed in Kuwait since the Gulf War.

Most of the 3rd Division troops deploying to Kuwait are from the division's 3rd Brigade, headquartered at Fort Benning. Local troops deploying are from 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation and a Multiple Launch Rocket System battery from the division's artillery.
Army officials would not say when most troops would leave due to security concerns. Deployments generally last several months.
