WASHINGTON - Alan Murray, Washington bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal, is moving to CNBC to be the cable business news channel's Washington bureau chief and to co-host a prime-time show.

Pamela Thomas-Graham, who became chief executive of the New Jersey-based network last year, told The Washington Post in Wednesday's editions that Murray's hiring is part of an effort at repositioning.

"Part of my vision for CNBC is that we have much more nuanced coverage of Washington," she said. "I've heard from corporate leaders and CEOs that they want to understand Washington on a much more detailed level."

Murray, 47, told the Post said he's been thinking for some time about "what I would do for a next act."

He considered running a Washington think tank, among other things. An 18-year veteran of the Journal, Murray will maintain his connection with the paper by writing a weekly column for the politics page.

Murray has been a frequent guest on CNBC, which has an alliance with the Journal. A longtime regular on PBS's "Washington Week in Review," he would be the first CNBC bureau chief to double as an on-air personality.
