GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA - A man who burglarized a Middleburg home has been charged with the murder of an elderly man who had a heart attack during the invasion, officials said.
Jimmie Boyd, 26, was charged Friday for the death of Willie Padgett, who was 69 when he died.
Three or four people broke into Padgett's home on Feb. 27, 1998, first throwing a cement block through a bedroom window and firing a gun through the kitchen window, said Clay County Sheriff's Sgt. Wes Gronikowski.
The burglars knocked Padgett's wife, Shirley, out of her wheel chair and bound their son with duct tape before hitting him in the eye with the butt of a shotgun, according to sheriff's reports.
Willie Padgett began to have trouble breathing and his eyes rolled back in his head, but the burglars denied the family's pleas to give the ailing man his nitroglycerine pills call an ambulance, officials said. Willie died of a heart attack at the scene.
Witnesses told authorities that Boyd told them he planned to rob the Padgetts and later admitted to the robbery but said he didn't intend for anyone to die, according to court documents.
Boyd fled to Georgia and later moved to the Fort Myers area, according to court documents. He was arrested in September for possessing seven pounds of marijuana.
No one else has been arrested in the case.
