Deputy pleads guilty to lying to police

DALTON - A Whitfield County deputy has pleaded guilty to giving police a false statement about a fatal accident that killed a Dalton police officer. <br> <br> Captain Greg Roberson, who headed the county traffic enforcement unit, was sentenced Tuesday to one year probation and must surrender his Georgia Pacific Officer certification, according to District Attorney Kermit McManus. <br> <br> Roberson responded to a motorcycle wreck on October 14 that killed Dalton officer Stanley White. White often carried three guns, but after the accident Roberson reported only one gun. <br> <br> Four days later, police discovered Roberson had taken the other two guns. <br> <br> Roberson was charged with violating an oath of office and was later fired. He has appealed his termination to the Whitfield County Merit Board. A hearing has been scheduled for March 4.
