ATLANTA - bill introduced Thursday in the Georgia House would require all public schools and colleges to prominently display the national motto, ``In God We Trust.''
``We just think it certainly does no harm and it might inspire, particularly in these times, some patriotism,'' said Rep. Roger Byrd, D-Hazlehurst, one of the sponsors.
The motto already adorns the new Georgia flag, approved by lawmakers last year, and bills similar to the one Byrd is cosponsoring have been introduced this year in several other states.
A fundamentalist Christian group, the American Family Association, in Tupelo, Miss., started a movement to urge legislatures across the country to adopt ``In God We Trust'' legislation. The organization has asked its 200,000 members from all 50 states to contact lawmakers and push for similar laws.
Critics argue the legislation is a veiled attempt to bring religion into the schools.
``Even if it is, it certainly does no harm,'' Byrd said. ``It can only help."
