MACON - First Night Macon, a downtown New Year's Eve celebration started to provide a family night on the town, is being canceled after several years of declining attendance.
The event emphasized culture and the performing arts in a nonalcoholic environment. It will not be back to ring in 2003, ending a 12-year run.
It once attracted more than 5,000 revelers but attendance in recent years dwindled to about a thousand.
Though 200 cities across the country still host First Night events, last year 20 or so celebrations were canceled because of lost funding and fallout from September 11.
