COVINGTON - A prosecutor says members of the quasi-religious Nuwaubian sect are trying to taint potential jurors in the child molestation trial of their leader by spreading defamatory fliers.
Malachi York is the leader of the Nuwaubians.

He had his trial moved from Putnam County to Covington four weeks ago because of concerns that pretrial publicity would prevent jurors from being impartial.

District Attorney Fred Bright says that since then, the Nuwaubians have traveled to Covington to hand out fliers at shopping centers and to leave tabloid newspapers on car windshields.
York faces charges of sexually abusing children in a 208-count state indictment and a four-count federal indictment.
Bright says he's not pleased with the fliers but there's no way to stop them because they have freedom of speech rights.
