JEKYLL ISLAND - Hoping to boost winter tourism, authorities in Jekyll Island are scattering glass balls along the beach.

The plan sounds odd, but the Jekyll Island Authority hopes it will draw attention to the resort island. Four glass baubles will be placed along the beach each day for 45 days, and the people who find them will be invited to a Finders Keepers Ball in February.

The baubles are similar to antique Japanese glass fishing floats. They're a little bigger than a softball, although their sizes and shapes vary. The floats will be placed along the beach between the dunes and the high water mark.
``We expect in the long run this will become a popular element and add to the reason why people visit Jekyll Island,'' said Eric Garvey, marketing director for the Jekyll Island Authority.
The promotion will run through Feb. 15, when the Finders Keepers Ball will be held along with dinner, dancing and two art auctions.
Anyone who finds a float will be given a free ticket to the ball. The tickets also can be purchased.
