Campo fired as Cowboys coach

By
IRVING, TEXAS - Dave Campo has been fired after three seasons as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach. Team owner Jerry Jones made the announcement Monday, less than 24 hours after the Cowboys completed their third straight 5-and-11 season.

Campo was the fifth coach in team history and the first to leave the team with a losing record. He's also the first to never win the NFC East or make the playoffs.

Jones says he's been in contact with both Bill Parcells and former Minnesota Vikings owner Dennis Green. Jones began discussions with Parcells about two weeks ago, and their negotiations have heated up in recent days.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers say they are entitled to compensation from any team interested in speaking with Parcells, claiming Parcells signed a deal last January before backing out of the contract.

Green spent nearly ten years as the Vikings coach before being replaced with one game remaining in the 2001 season. He was 101-and-70 including playoffs.
Jones says he has no timetable for naming a replacement for Campo.
