Trial upcoming for Jonesboro woman involved in deadly wreck

By
FAYETTEVILLE - A woman who led police on a 22-mile chase that ended with the death of a bystander faces trial December second.

Thirty-seven-year-old Lorraine McCrary of Jonesboro made her first appearance today in Fayette County Superior Court. She pleaded innocent to charges of murder, vehicular homicide and a number of traffic violations.

McCrary did not speak at the hearing and is confined to a wheelchair. She is recovering from injuries sustained in the wreck that ended the chase July 27 and is being held in the medical unit of the Fulton County Jail.

Her lawyer, Jerry Boykin, said McCrary should be released on bond because she needs more medical care and is not a flight risk because of her injuries, which include partial paralysis.

A bond hearing is scheduled for November 26 before Judge Johnnie Caldwell.

McCrary also faces charges including fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, speeding, two counts of reckless conduct and ten counts of forgery in the second degree.

Authorities chased McCrary through three counties after she fled when police stopped her for questioning about a minor accident. Her vehicle crashed in Peachtree City, killing the driver of a van, 41-year-old Chuck Vicha.

Vicha's mother, Alice Vicha, attended the hearing and said afterwards that she's now an advocate for regulations to reduce the number of police chases.
