DALTON - Family members of a Whitfield County jail inmate who got sick and died say he did not receive proper medical treatment.
The jail supervisor says the jailers responded properly.
An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday to reveal whether Frederick Eugene Collins died of natural causes, Coroner Bobbie Dixon said.
Collins died Tuesday morning at Hamilton Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., after being sick for a few days. He had been at the jail since Nov. 11 on charges of simple battery and probation violation.
Peggy Haynes, Collins' sister, said he died of a bacterial staph infection.
Collins complained of chest discomfort and congestion on Thursday and was given medication by county health department personnel, said Lt. Jim Quarles, supervisor of the jail.
On Sunday, Collins complained again, and the shift supervisor sent him to a clinic, Quarles said. He was treated and sent to Hamilton Medical Center at about 6 p.m. Life support was removed early Tuesday.
``It's just neglect that they let him stay there sick so long,'' said Collins' wife, Della.
``Where is the neglect?'' Quarles said. ``When he complained, he was treated, first by the health department, then by MedNow and the hospital. I feel like our people have covered all the bases and have given him the necessary attention.''
