ATHENS - In an economy burdened with layoffs, cutbacks and few new job opportunities, one employer has continued to grow -- the federal government.
As jobs become harder to find, recent college graduates are turning to the government for employment opportunities.
For the first time in years, the University of Georgia Career Center is organizing a career fair solely for students interested in nonprofit and federal agencies.
The federal government plans to hire 250,000 people in the next two years as nearly 50 percent of its 1.8 million workers approach retirement.
In addition, the newly created Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration are hiring thousands of employees.
Several UGA students seemed lukewarm to the federal governments offer. They said they are not convinced they could find a better job that suits their abilities in the federal government.
