Seven die in outbreak of foodborne backeteria

By
ATLANTA - Seven people have died and three pregnant women had miscarriages or stillbirths as the result of a foodborne bacteria believed to have come from sliced deli turkey, the government said Friday.

At least 40 people have been sickened by a strain of Listeria, mostly in the Northeast, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

There have been 14 cases of listeriosis in Pennsylvania and 14 in New York, including 11 in New York City; four in Delaware; four in New Jersey; two in Maryland; one in Connecticut and one in Michigan, the CDC said.

Federal, state and local health officials are trying to determine the brand, or brands, of the product involved.

Listeriosis which causes initial symptons of fever, muscle aches and sometimes nausea or diarrhea is particularly dangerous to the elderly of those with weakened immune systems. People at high risk should heat deli meats thoroughly, and those in risk groups in the states affected by the disease can reduce their risk of infection by not eating sliced deli turkey, the CDC said.

In addition to the 40 cases confirmed to be part of the same outbreak, the CDC and state health departments have learned of others in the same region. DNA analysis has shown that strains from more than 30 patients in the same states are different from the fatal outbreak.

About 2,500 cases of listeriosis occur each year in the United States. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance of convulsions could occur, the CDC said.
