ATLANTA - A majority of Georgia voters either favor the change made in the state flag last year or don't care, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/WSB-TV poll.
In the survey, four in 10 voters said they opposed the change, including more than half of all white voters but only 11 percent of black voters. Twenty-four percent of those polled favored the changing of the state flag, and 35 percent expressed no opinion.
The Legislature changed the flag in January 2001 under pressure from Gov. Roy Barnes and business leaders. The Confederate battle emblem prominent on the old flag was reduced to a fragment of its size, and is displayed with banners that have flown over the state.
The poll showed that opposition to the flag change is strongest among native Georgians, and in rural areas where support of Confederate heritage is strongest.
However, a quarter of Georgians who opposed changing the flag also say they'll vote for Barnes.
