ATLANTA - Federal inspectors responding to complaints at Georgia Regional Hospital at Atlanta have told hospital officials that there will be citations because of overcrowding and understaffing.
Karl Schwarzkopf, director of the state division that oversees mental health facilities, said Friday that the final report from a surprise inspection by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services was not complete.
But the hospital, located in suburban Decatur, will be given a deadline to fix the problems found during visits Sunday through Thursday
"Whatever the citations are, we are committed to meeting those in the time frame given, and making sure we are providing the best care possible to the people who depend on us," Schwarzkopf said.
The hospital, which opened in 1968, has more than 350 patient beds. One of eight state mental hospitals, it provides psychiatric care to adults and children, as well as operating a learning center for the developmentally disabled.
Schwarzkopf said admissions have increased 5 percent in each of the last three years, but, "We believe we have enough staff to maintain adequate care."
