ATLANTA - For years, Ted Turner has been chiding Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett to share more of his wealth, and his encouragement may have finally paid off.
Buffett, the second-richest American with $36 billion at last count, recently donated $2.5 million to one of Turner's philanthropic endeavors - the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
But Buffett said the gift had less to do with Turner's chiding than Buffett's relationship with former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn, co-chairman of the initiative. The two are on the board of Coca-Cola and often talk about weapons of mass destruction.
"I have long regarded the nuclear problem as the ultimate threat to mankind," Buffett told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an interview published Thursday.
Buffett said he and Turner approach philanthropy differently. Turner gives away much of his money while he's still living, and Buffett intends to give away his fortune after he's gone.
"Everything I've made in life, or 99.9 or 99.8 percent of it will go to philanthropy," Buffett said.
