Adam Andrews, a Collinwood sophomore, was injured Tuesday in a tackle along the sideline on the final play of his team's 22-0 junior varsity win over Mount Pleasant.
"He never moved after the hit," Collinwood coach Michael Statom said.
Collinwood Principal Herb Luker and two assistant coaches were at the hospital in Nashville with Andrews' family during the six-hour surgery Thursday. Doctors removed the broken vertebra and fused two others with the help of a bone graft from his hip.
Emergency medical workers stabilized Andrews on the field, and he was airlifted to Nashville.
"Can he walk again after an injury like this? Some people have. We just don't know yet," Statom said.
Collinwood's game at Huntland remained on Friday night's schedule.
