ATLANTA - The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has received federal money to help teachers breath life into history lessons.
The system has received the Teaching American History Grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The grant will provide one million dollars over three years to train teachers to use innovative methods to teach United States history.

The local project is called ``History is Monumental.''

Under the grant, more than 200 of the district's history teachers will participate in staff development programs including a history summer institute, graduate-level American History survey courses at Armstrong Atlantic State University and other lectures.

In addition, a January kickoff of the program will feature a nationally known speaker.

Online archives of history documents will be available to teachers, who can develop Web-based curriculum guides.
District officials hope the grant will help make history relevant for teachers so they can pass it on to students.
