Decision on Muslim cemetery delayed again

By
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Gwinnett County planning commissioners have again delayed a decision on whether to allow a Muslim cemetery in the county.

Meeting briefly before adjourning because of snow, the commission tabled a decision until next month. It was the fourth time since June the case has been tabled.

Some people who live near the proposed site have raised health concerns about Islamic burial rituals. Observant Muslims bury their dead within 24 hours, wrapping the bodies in shrouds without caskets.

The proposed cemetery was to go before a county planning board and its full county commission in September. Both boards postponed the hearings at the request of Muslim community leaders, who feared anti-Muslim sentiment following the terrorist attacks.

Hafiz Abdal Ghaffar Khan, the leader of the Georgia Islamic Institute, said he planned to meet with nearby residents on the matter. Commissioner Jeremy Argroves said officials would wait until after the meeting to make a decision.
