Fire kills five, including mother, two children

MILLEN, Ga. - A mobile home fire early Wednesday in southeast Georgia killed five people a woman, her two children and two nephews, officials said.

The roof had collapsed when Jenkins County firefighters arrived at the blaze, which started shortly before 3 a.m., said Rew Herrman, an assistant fire chief.

``It's in a rural area, and that's the problem,'' Herrmann said. ``There's not much traffic out there. The fire had been burning for some time before someone noticed it.''

Coroner Robert Fields said Jackie Williams, 38, her two children Willis Simpson, 8, and Christian Cooper, 5, and nephews Brian McClain, 13, and Travis McClain, 14, died from asphyxiation.

A neighbor, David Bunch, called the fire department when he noticed the fire had cut off his power, Herrmann said. Both the mobile home and Bunch's residence shared the same transformer, and the blaze apparently tripped a fuse, he said.

Two bodies were found in one of the two bedrooms, and the others were in the living room, Fields said. Firefighters also found three space heaters among the ruins, he said.

The cause of the fire was being investigated by the arson unit with the Georgia Insurance Commissioner's Office, Herrmann said.
