AUGUSTA - A Richmond County narcotics officer was suspended without pay pending a criminal probe by the FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency, police said.

Investigator Tyrone Williams, a veteran officer, was suspended Wednesday while an investigation continues, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said Thursday.

``Further than that, we can make no other comment,'' he told The Augusta Chronicle.

Authorities will not talk about the probe until after the first or second week of February, said Ed Reinhold, a resident special agent with the FBI office in Augusta.

Williams, who has not been charged with a crime, was told of his suspension during a meeting in Strength's office.

Strength maintains the suspension is not related to an extortion scandal that led to the arrests of investigator Roderick Berry and Lt. Stoney R. Turnage.

Berry, 43, and Turnage, 47, were accused of accepting $40,000 in cash, tickets to the Masters gold tournament, shirts and Cuban cigars over the past five years in exchange for allowing an Augusta nightclub, Dolls Downtown, to keep its entertainment license.
